4 Ways Teeth Naturally Move Over Time

A man is smiling while looking at himself in the mirror.

When you're dealing with teeth that have begun to shift, it can be annoying in both appearance and function. Luckily, your local orthodontist is available to align your teeth as comfortably as possible. But why do teeth start to shift? Read on to find the various reasons your teeth may shift over time.

1. Grinding
Do you grind your teeth in your sleep? Teeth grinding can happen for many reasons, but it's most commonly associated with the daily stress we all experience in our lives. The pressure from your teeth grinding together can cause them to shift, chip, crack, and wear down over time.

2. Age
As you age, every part of your body naturally changes, and your teeth are no different. According to the American Association of Orthodontics, your jawbone changes as you age, which often causes teeth to shift. Don't be surprised if your once-perfect teeth that you had most of your life suddenly start shifting as you grow older. (Hint: This is why your orthodontist is so serious about asking you to wear your retainers after orthodontic treatment!)

3. Trauma
Oral trauma can cause the teeth and jaw to move out of place. For example, if you were to have an accident that resulted in facial impact, there’s a possibility of damage to the teeth, the bone directly surrounding them, and the jawbone. That’s why orthodontists recommend that patients wear a sports mouthguard when playing sports and performing physical activities as a protective measure, the same way you wear a seatbelt to protect yourself when you ride in the car.

4. Gum Disease
Gum disease can wreak havoc in your mouth. Not only does it cause your gums to recede and bleed, but it can also cause bone loss that results in permanent teeth becoming loose and sometimes even lost. Avoid the devastating impact of gum disease by practicing good oral hygiene.

If you notice your teeth moving over time, it's not necessarily a cause for alarm, as long as you’re seeing your general dentist regularly in order to monitor your oral health. However, if the shifting concerns you, an Orthodontist can offer guidance. If you’re not happy with the way your teeth have shifted, come visit us at Cuozzo Orthodontics!
