10 Things to Know When Choosing an Orthodontist

Selecting a qualified orthodontist for either you or a family member is an important step toward successfully addressing orthodontic concerns. Here are a few points to contemplate before making the final decision:

1. Consider your needs.

Although many dentists offer orthodontic procedures, this does not necessarily mean they have undergone the advanced training and additional education required of orthodontic specialists. A dentist may offer braces or other types of orthodontic techniques, but an orthodontist has the additional training and skills to increase the chances of successful results.

2. Research is key.

When first looking for an orthodontist, we suggest looking for one that has been recognized as a specialist and studied under an approved curriculum from the American Dental Association.

3. Be wary.

Some dentists and orthodontists may claim to be specialists in certain fields, when really they are not. It’s important to use caution and never be afraid to ask questions and scrutinize credentials.

4. Review their education.

See where the orthodontist completed their undergraduate and dental school education. Also, find out if they have pursued continuing education and advanced training courses.

5. Review their credentials.

We recommend choosing an orthodontist who is board-certified through the American Board of Orthodontics.

6. Check out their website.

An orthodontist who is committed to providing patients with quality care should have a polished, comprehensive website that is easy to navigate and offers helpful information.

7. Location, location, location.

Orthodontic treatments can often be a long-term commitment, so ask your potential orthodontist if they are planning on staying at their current office for the near future.

8. You don’t need a referral.

Most of the patients that visit our New Jersey orthodontist for the first time have found him based on his excellent reputation. Patients do not need a referral from another practice for orthodontic treatment at our office.

9. Schedule a consultation.

After narrowing down your choices, meet with your potential orthodontist. Get to know them and see if you feel confident in their abilities and comfortable in their care.

10. Ask the right questions.

What is the scope of procedures they offer? How many years of experience do they have? Will you need someone to drive you home after your procedure? What are the risks and benefits of certain treatments? What insurances does the practice accept? What can I ultimately expect? Never hesitate to ask any and all questions you may have and ensure that your concerns are addressed.
