What Causes Crooked Teeth?
Teeth that are misaligned (or “crooked”) can either come in that way as they first push through the gums, or they can develop a crooked appearance over time. Let’s look at some of the more common causes of teeth misalignment and a few of the many orthodontic treatments that can be helpful for addressing this concern:
Some individuals have mouths that are simply too small for the teeth as they come in. In these cases, the teeth can bunch up together and become crowded, or they can shift into positions that create gaps between the teeth or a “twisted” appearance. Other individuals may experience crooked teeth because of malformed jaws, or an upper jaw that is a different size than the lower jaw. This can produce bite irregularities such as an overbite or underbite, and ultimately lead to teeth misalignment.
While the reasons for crooked teeth listed above are indicative of hereditary or inherent causes, misalignment can occur after the teeth have already appeared in a perfectly regular position, as well. Gum disease, premature loss of the baby teeth or permanent teeth, excessive pressure on the teeth, poor nutrition, inadequate dental care, jaw misalignment following a traumatic injury or another kind of medical issue, and even a poorly-fitting dental restoration can have an effect on teeth alignment. In some cases, children who suck their thumbs excessively or use a pacifier/bottle beyond the recommended age for stopping these practices may experience irregular teeth alignment.
Crooked teeth can not only affect the look of one’s smile; they can also create functional issues, discomfort, and speech problems. Fortunately there are many orthodontic treatments that can improve teeth alignment and give the teeth a straighter, more uniform appearance. Options include various types of braces, Invisalign®, and many others available right here at Cuozzo Orthodontic Specialists.
