Dr. James Dodd first knew he wanted to be an orthodontist when he received Phase 1 treatment at 8 years old. He even has his third-grade Time Capsule Project to prove it, which proudly stated his goal to become an “orthadontist” when he grew up. A Virginia native, Dr. James attended the University of Virginia for his undergraduate studies before moving to Richmond, VA to attend dental school at Virginia Commonwealth University.
While in dental school, Dr. James’s passion for orthodontics only grew. He participated in multiple research studies in the Graduate Orthodontic Clinic, one of which was published in the prestigious American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. At the end of his senior year, he was awarded the AAO Award for Exceptional Interest in the Development of the Oro-Facial Complex, an award granted yearly by the American Association of Orthodontists to one senior student who has been judged by the student’s faculty to have demonstrated the most outstanding qualities in the study of the Oro-Facial Complex.
After dental school, Dr. James completed his orthodontics residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, where he earned a certificate in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics and served as Chief Resident during his final year. Montefiore’s three-year, hospital-based program allowed him to treat hundreds of complex orthodontic cases including surgical, open bite, crossbite, extraction, cleft lip and palate, and syndromic cases. He is trained and certified in a variety of orthodontic techniques, such as metal brackets, clear brackets, expanders, clear aligner therapy, and Phase 1 treatment. He is a board-certified orthodontist, diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, and an active member of the American Association of Orthodontists and Northeastern Society of Orthodontists.
Dr. James prides himself on his ability to put patients of all ages at ease. He truly loves getting to know all of his patients and couldn’t be more excited to be a part of a practice with a history of creating healthy, beautiful smiles. In his free time, Dr. James enjoys spending time with his family, supporting UVA athletics, exploring Central Park with his dog Tito, and going to the movies.
